In memory of Velda DeMoss, “Team Velda’s Varieties” stepped off proud as one of the teams that participated in the Greene County Relay for Life and the “Color Out Cancer” walk. The team at the walk included Lori DeMoss, Shannon DeMoss, Rick and Mary Liebich, Mary Weaver, Connie Neese, and Dale and Nancy Hanaman. Mary Weaver provided purple and yellow scarves to honor Velda’s days at Rippey High School and Nancy Hanaman provided clown noses in honor of Velda and Jean Borgeson’s clowning.
Lori and Shannon walked with great vigor while Rick, Dale and Nancy took a short cut. Ask them for more details. Others supported the team in other ways. More than $500 was donated by friends and family in the local community, as well as from around the country, in Velda’s memory to the American Cancer Society to aid in the fight against cancer.

Looking ahead, Rippey Methodist Guest Day will be held on Thursday, May 7, at 9:30 am. The invitations have been sent out and the women are busy baking egg muffins for the brunch while the crazy “Rippey Revelers” are practicing a new skit to present for the program. This year’s theme is Angels, and of course there will be a little devilment mixed in for good measure! “You all come!” a spokesperson said.

News in and around Rippey
Alumni reunion; May is fast approaching. The Rippey alumni invitations have been sent and Mary Ann (Young) Miller reports the responses have started coming in. She also is starting a list of those letters that came back with address unknown. Every year, Velda DeMoss, Valerie Ogren, and Jean Borgeson would try so hard to find out about the status of these people. Hopefully, the list will be short this year. Memorial Day Weekend is always a special time for Rippey. It’s amazing how many still attend the alumni party, church, and the services at the cemetery. Even Jean, a non-Rippey graduate, looks forward to seeing the “regulars” who come.
This year the graduates from the newly formed East Greene who were still in high school at that time, were sent invites. Some of those members expressed interest in attending and the opening of the time capsule this year seemed to spark even more to respond. Remember to send in your response, so the committee can have a head count.
Nancy and Dale Hanaman traveled to Wisconsin via Honey Creek State Park and Resort. While there, they attended one day of the Iowa United Methodist Church School for Ministry and heard presentations by Rita Nakishima Brock and two other speakers dealing with moral injury in combat and other situations. They also shared the importance of understanding and proper treatment for those suffering moral injury. They journeyed on to Rice Lake, WI, to visit with Matthew Hanaman and Adrianna and Adyara and to celebrate Matthew’s birthday.
